TOTALLY PRESENT

Can you be totally present? Can you have a conversation with somebody and not lose yourself in thoughts along the way? Can you be so present with somebody that you do not think about anything else other than the conversation at hand when you are chatting to them? It is not easy! It really isn’t.

My girlfriend and I had this conversation recently about how hard we try to be as present as we can when in conversation with people. Whether that be together, friends or clients, we try our best to do it. Sometimes I find myself moving into what’s next or thinking about something from before and as soon as I notice it, I bring myself back to the present.

It takes some practice and I have been trying for a while and still stumbling with it. I have started feeling bad for the person I am with if, only for a matter of seconds, I drift off and later I worry that it may have been obvious. I wonder how good you are at staying totally present and whether you find it as difficult as I sometimes do.

I think it is important to have a beautiful imagination and the ability to think about things but I also think it is important to be able to control your presence of mind and that you show respect in doing so. Our minds are constantly working and sometimes that take us places that we did not want to go to at that point in time.

I want you to think about it in conversations with others today, how present are you and can you maintain that presence? Keeping in mind that to think about this during the first conversation of your day will mean thinking back to my blog and therefore not being present! However, try it!

I am curious as to what you learn and what you notice about your attention span and if you are able to do something about it.

YOU’RE PERFECTLY CAPABLE.
